Rules for a code that always scans
- Size. 1 x 1 in scans reliably at arm's length. Go to 2 x 2 in for a code read from several feet, or from a forklift.
- Quiet zone. Leave blank margin equal to four modules around the code. Art crowding the code is the number one cause of failed scans.
- Contrast. Dark on light. Inverted codes and low-contrast brand colors fail under warehouse lighting.
- No gloss glare on overhead-lit assets. Matte laminate scans better under fluorescent and LED fixtures.
- Never place a code across a sharp curve or a panel gap.
Durability
Asset tags live on machines that get washed, hit and left outdoors. Laminated 3 mil vinyl with permanent acrylic adhesive holds 5+ years. Unlaminated codes lose contrast as ink fades, which is exactly when scanning stops working.
Where the code should point
Use a short, stable URL you control, ideally with a redirect layer, so you can change the destination later without reprinting tags. Point it at an asset record, a maintenance log, a manual or a reorder page.
