How do I read an oil change sticker?
An oil change sticker shows when your next oil change is due. It usually lists a date and a mileage. Change the oil at whichever comes first. Many stickers also show the oil type used, such as 5W-30 synthetic, and the shop's name and phone number so you can book the next visit.
| Next service date | Change by this date even if you drive little |
|---|---|
| Next service mileage | Compare with your odometer |
| Oil type | Viscosity and blend, e.g. 5W-30 synthetic |
| Rule of thumb | Whichever comes first, date or miles |
The date line
This is the latest date your next oil change should happen. Oil breaks down over time even if the car sits, so follow the date even if you haven't hit the mileage.
The mileage line
This is the odometer reading for your next change. Check your dashboard odometer and compare it with the sticker.
Oil type
Some stickers note the oil used, such as 5W-30 or 0W-20, and whether it's synthetic. Your owner's manual lists what your car needs.
The shop
The logo and phone number show who did the last service, so booking the next one is one call. Shops that want their own reminders can order custom stickers with their name on them.
