How long does a vinyl banner last outdoors?
A 13oz banner hung properly lasts about 1 to 3 years outdoors depending on sun and wind, and effectively indefinitely indoors. 18oz heavy duty extends outdoor life, especially in exposed locations. Almost all early failure is mechanical, from wind whipping at the mounting points, not from the print fading.

What actually ends a banner's life
- Wind. A banner that flaps tears itself out at the grommets. This is by far the number one cause.
- Mounting. Zip ties are rigid and concentrate stress. Bungee cords stretch and absorb it.
- Sun. UV eventually softens color, especially reds. Slower than most people expect.
- Abrasion. A banner rubbing against a brick wall or fence rail wears through.
Get more life out of it
- Use bungee cords or elastic ball ties, not zip ties.
- Tension every grommet evenly. A slack banner flaps; an over-tight banner tears.
- Choose grommets every 2-3 ft outdoors, and every 12-18 in in high wind.
- On large fence banners, ask about wind slits.
- Take seasonal banners down between uses; store rolled, not folded.
- Clean with mild soap and water. Never use solvent.
Indoor life
Indoors, there is no meaningful wear mechanism. Colors hold, the material does not fatigue, and the banner will outlast the promotion printed on it.
When to upgrade to 18oz
If the banner is going to be up year round, is over about 10 ft long, faces open wind, or is printed double-sided, the heavier material pays for itself in not reprinting.
