Do QR code stickers actually scan reliably?

Yes, when printed correctly. A QR sticker needs to be at least 1 inch square for close scanning, use dark code on a light background, keep a quiet zone of four modules on all sides, and avoid a glare-heavy gloss finish under direct light. We test-scan every QR order before it ships.

The size rule that matters

QR readability follows a simple ratio: the code needs to be about one tenth the scanning distance. Scanning from 10 inches away needs a 1 inch code. Scanning a warehouse rack from 10 feet away needs a 12 inch code. Undersizing is the single most common reason field QR codes fail.

Contrast and inversion

Dark code on a light field. Inverted codes (light on dark) work on newer phones but fail on older scanners and on many industrial readers. If your brand demands a dark background, keep a light panel behind the code itself.

Finish

Gloss laminate looks great and creates specular glare under overhead lighting, which is exactly the condition most people scan in. For anything mounted on a wall, menu, pump, or piece of equipment, choose matte.

Dynamic codes

Use a dynamic QR service so you can change the destination URL later without reprinting. A static code baked to a specific URL becomes landfill the day that page moves.

What we do on our end

Every QR order is test scanned off the finished print with both iOS and Android before it leaves the building. If your submitted code has an error-correction level or module density that will not survive at the requested size, prepress flags it in the proof rather than shipping something that fails in the field.
