What laminate is
Laminate is a thin clear film that is pressure-bonded to the surface of the printed vinyl before cutting. It is not a spray, a varnish or a coating baked into the ink. It is a separate physical layer with its own UV inhibitors.
What it protects against
- Sunlight. UV is what fades ink. The laminate absorbs it first.
- Water and cleaning chemicals. Unlaminated eco-solvent ink can be rubbed off with solvent. Laminated ink cannot be reached.
- Abrasion. Keys, brushes, car washes, warehouse traffic. The laminate scuffs so the print does not.
- Handling. Fingerprints and oils sit on a wipeable surface.
What happens without it
An unlaminated printed vinyl sticker in direct sun typically shows visible fade in 6 to 18 months, and the ink can be scratched off with a fingernail once it has weathered. That is the product a lot of cheap online printers ship, because skipping laminate removes a material and a full production pass.
Why we include it
Reprints cost us more than laminate does. Making it standard means every order that leaves the building is rated for the same 5+ years outdoors, and we do not have to sell "outdoor" as an upgrade.
Choosing a finish
