How is a 5 year outdoor sticker rating actually measured?
The rating comes from the film manufacturer's own testing: accelerated weathering chambers plus real vertical outdoor exposure panels in high-UV climates. It describes a vertically mounted, laminated graphic that has not been abraded. Horizontal, sun-facing surfaces age faster; shaded and indoor surfaces last far longer.

Where the number comes from
We do not invent durability numbers. 3M, General Formulations and the laminate manufacturers publish durability figures for each film based on:
- Accelerated weathering. Xenon-arc chambers cycle intense UV, heat and condensation to compress years of exposure into weeks.
- Real exposure racks. Panels mounted outdoors in high-UV regions such as Florida and Arizona, checked on a schedule for fade, cracking, adhesion loss and edge lift.
Our stated rating is the film plus laminate combination, not the film alone.
What the rating assumes
- The graphic is mounted vertically (a wall, a door, a window, a truck side).
- It is laminated.
- It was applied to a clean, sound surface.
- It is not being scoured, pressure-washed at close range, or exposed to solvents daily.
What changes it

What "failure" means
At end of life you do not usually get a sticker falling off. You get gradual color shift, especially in reds and vibrant blues, and eventually a chalky surface. Adhesion typically outlasts appearance.
