Do you have to laminate an overlay decal?

Laminate is not physically required, but any printed decal that lives outdoors, gets handled, or faces cleaning chemicals needs it. Unlaminated solvent-printed vinyl typically starts fading and scuffing within 6 to 12 months outdoors, while a laminated decal is rated 5+ years. Every Stickerine sticker ships laminated by default.

What laminate actually does

  • Blocks UV. Solvent ink pigments fade under sun. The laminate carries the UV inhibitors that protect them.
  • Resists abrasion. Anything touched, brushed, pressure-washed or dragged loses ink without a wear layer.
  • Resists chemicals. Dispensary sanitizer, shop degreaser, dishwasher detergent and fuel splash all attack raw ink.
  • Adds stiffness. A laminated decal is easier to apply flat and less likely to stretch on a curve.

When you can skip it

  • Indoor, short-term signage or event labels used for a few weeks
  • Sealed packaging labels that will be discarded with the box
  • Anything covered by another layer, like under-glass or behind acrylic

When it is not optional

  • Vehicles, boats, trailers and outdoor equipment
  • Water bottles, tumblers and anything dishwashed
  • Industrial asset tags and safety labels
  • Cannabis and food packaging that gets wiped down
  • Any decal you want to still look right in a year

Gloss vs matte laminate

Gloss deepens color and hides fine scratches. Matte kills glare and photographs better but shows fingerprints on dark art. Both carry the same UV package.

Related questions

Is laminate included in Stickerine's price?
Yes. Premium UV laminate is included on every sticker at no extra cost. Economy laminate is available at 15% less for indoor-only jobs.
Can I add laminate to a decal I already printed elsewhere?
Applying laminate after the fact is possible in a shop with a cold roll laminator, but it will not save a decal that has already been outdoors, since fading has already started.
