How do I install a storefront window decal without bubbles?
| Small decals | Dry application under about 6 in |
|---|---|
| Large decals | Wet application for easier positioning |
| Application temperature | 50-90 F |
| Cure before cleaning | 24 hours |
Order the correct window decal first
Choose outside-facing adhesive for a normal first-surface installation. Choose reverse printing when the decal will mount inside the glass and read correctly from outside. Clear vinyl needs a white ink underbase wherever light colors must stay solid against daylight.
Prepare and position
- Remove dust and old adhesive from the glass.
- Wipe with 70% isopropyl alcohol, then let the glass dry completely.
- Hold the decal in place with its liner still on and run masking tape vertically through the center as a hinge.
- Check the position from outside before exposing adhesive.
Install small decals dry
For a logo or hours panel under about 6 inches, fold one side back at the hinge, peel half the liner, and squeegee from the hinge toward the edge. Remove the tape and repeat on the other side.
Install larger decals wet
Mix one or two drops of dish soap into a pint of water. Mist the glass and adhesive, float the decal into position, then squeegee from the center outward in firm overlapping strokes. Push every pocket of water to the nearest edge. Let it dry for 24 hours before cleaning the glass.
Avoid the failures that cause reorders
- Do not use household glass cleaner immediately before installation; additives can weaken the bond.
- Do not install below 50 F or on sun-heated glass.
- Do not peel the whole liner from a large dry decal and try to place it freehand.
- Wait until the adhesive cures before trimming or washing the edges.
Related questions
- Should a storefront decal go inside or outside the glass?
- Inside-glass installation protects the print from weather and tampering, but the artwork must be reverse printed. Outside installation works for any standard decal.
- Can I use the wet method on clear vinyl?
- Yes. Squeegee thoroughly and allow the remaining moisture to evaporate; temporary haze pockets clear as it dries.
- What if bubbles remain?
- Small bubbles often settle as the adhesive wets out. For a larger trapped bubble, prick its edge with a pin and press the air toward the opening.
