How do I apply a vinyl decal?
To apply a vinyl decal, clean the surface with rubbing alcohol and let it dry. Position the decal and tape it along the top edge. Flip it up, peel off the backing, then lower it back down while pressing from the center outward with a squeegee or plastic card. Let it set for 24 hours before washing or getting it wet.

What you need
- Rubbing alcohol and a lint-free cloth
- Masking or painter's tape
- A squeegee or a plastic card
- A pin (only if you get a bubble)
Dry method (most decals and stickers)
- Clean. Wipe the surface with rubbing alcohol to remove oil and dust. Let it dry completely. Soap can leave a film, so skip it here.
- Position. Hold the decal in place and run a strip of tape across the top edge to make a hinge.
- Peel. Flip the decal up on its hinge and peel the backing away.
- Apply. Lower the decal slowly while pressing with your squeegee from the center out to the edges, pushing air out as you go.
- Remove transfer tape (if your decal has it) by peeling it back slowly at a sharp angle, close to the surface.
- Let it set. Avoid washing or soaking it for about 24 hours.
Wet method (large decals on glass or smooth surfaces)
Lightly mist the clean surface with water and one drop of dish soap. The decal can slide into position. Squeegee the water out firmly from the center, then let it dry longer before handling. Don't use the wet method on textured surfaces or on decals that aren't made for it.
Fixing bubbles
Small bubbles often disappear within a few days. For a stubborn one, prick it with a pin at the edge of the bubble and press the air out toward the hole.
Common mistakes
- Applying in cold weather. Adhesive bonds poorly below about 50°F (10°C).
- Touching the adhesive with your fingers.
- Pressing from one edge instead of the center, which traps air.
Related questions
- Can I reposition a vinyl decal?
- Usually only before you press it down firmly. Once the adhesive bonds, lifting it can stretch the vinyl. That's why the tape hinge method helps.
- How long before I can wash it?
- Wait about 24 hours so the adhesive can fully bond. After that, our laminated vinyl stickers are waterproof and dishwasher safe.
