Cannabis labels are pressure sensitive labels printed on waterproof material and applied to flower jars, prerolls, mylar pouches, vape cartridge boxes, concentrate containers, edibles and tinctures. A compliant cannabis label carries product identity, net weight, potency, batch or lot number, packaging date, licensee information, a state warning statement, a universal THC symbol where required, and usually a QR code that links to the certificate of analysis. Everything else on the label is branding, and branding is what actually sells the jar.
This guide covers the formats, the materials, the panel layout, the print process and the real cost per label at the quantities most operators order. We print cannabis labels every day at our own facilities in Florida and Greenville, South Carolina, so the numbers here are production numbers, not estimates copied off a competitor.

The mistake we see most often is one label size for everything. A 3.5 gram jar, a 1 gram cart box and a 100 milligram gummy pouch have wildly different available surface area, and forcing one artwork across all three is how brands end up with 4 point warning type that a regulator can reject.
Material choices, and what each one actually survives
Cannabis packaging lives a hard life. Jars come out of cold storage and sweat. Concentrate containers get terpene residue on the outside. Pouches get crumpled into pockets. Material matters more here than in almost any other label category.
White BOPP or vinyl, gloss laminated. The default. Opaque, waterproof, resists condensation and handling, prints saturated color. This is what we recommend for roughly eight out of ten cannabis SKUs. Matte laminate. Softer, more premium in hand, kills glare under dispensary display lighting. Slightly less scuff resistant than gloss, and dark matte labels show fingerprints. Clear BOPP. The no label look on glass jars and tincture bottles. Requires a white ink layer under any light artwork or your design disappears into the product behind it. We print white as a separate ink layer on the same pass. Holographic and metallic. Rainbow or mirror substrate under the artwork. Freezer grade adhesive. For anything that goes into cold storage and comes out into a humid room. Standard permanent adhesive can lift at the edges through repeated condensation cycles. If your product is cold chain, say so when you order and we spec the adhesive accordingly.A laminated vinyl label on 3M or General Formulations stock is rated five years outdoors. Nothing in a dispensary comes close to that kind of exposure, which means a properly built cannabis label will outlive the product inside it by years.
The compliance panel, plain English version
Requirements vary by state and they change, so treat this as the shape of the problem rather than legal advice. Verify the current rule set with your state regulator or your compliance counsel before you print.

Two of these bite operators over and over. The first is minimum type size, because a 6 point warning block eats far more label real estate than designers expect. The second is the universal symbol, which usually has a mandated minimum height and cannot be recolored, stretched or placed on a busy background. Build both into the layout first, then design the brand around them.
Batch codes and QR codes
Most operators now print the variable data (batch, harvest date, potency) on a small secondary label or a dedicated white panel, and keep the primary brand label static. That separation is the cheapest way to run a large print order without reprinting your whole label every time potency changes.
QR codes linking to the certificate of analysis are effectively standard. Print them at least 0.6 inches square, keep the quiet zone clear, and never reverse a QR out of a dark background unless you have tested a scan under dispensary lighting. Dark code on light background scans; the reverse frequently does not.
What cannabis labels actually cost
Pricing depends on size, material and quantity. These are representative per piece figures for a 2 x 3 inch laminated label:

We do not charge plate fees or setup fees, which is why a 25 piece test run is possible at all. Traditional flexo shops amortize plate costs across the run, so their per piece number only looks good above about 5,000. Digital UV printing removes that floor. How we print them
Cannabis artwork is unusually color hungry. Deep purples, neon limes, gradient foils and skin tones on character art all sit outside what four process colors can hit. Our presses run 11 color Epson UltraChrome ink sets plus Mimaki UV for specialty substrates, which extends the reproducible gamut well past CMYK and holds those colors consistently from the first roll to the last.
Cutting happens on Summa flatbed and Kongsberg X24 CNC equipment, with more cutter capacity being added as cannabis volume grows. We prepress every file in house and flag problems before anything goes to press. If your cut line is missing or your type falls under the legal minimum, you hear from a human, not from a rejected shipment.
