How do I choose the right custom label?

Six decisions settle it: water exposure, outdoor life, application method, surface type, removability and whether the product is regulated. Water exposure is the biggest one — laminated vinyl or polypropylene if yes, coated paper only if the label stays indoors and dry. Six questions that decide your label

Work through these in order. The first one eliminates most of the material list on its own.

1. Will the label touch water, oil, ice or a dishwasher?

If yes, you need laminated vinyl or polypropylene. Unlaminated paper fails on first contact. This is the single decision that causes the most reprints — see our material durability testing for the numbers.

2. Is it going outdoors?

UV is what kills labels outdoors, not water. Laminated vinyl holds colour roughly 3–5 years outdoors; BOPP is closer to 1–2. If it lives in direct southern sun, plan on the shorter end.

3. How are you applying them?

By hand under about 1,000 units, sheets or singles are fine. Above that, or if you have an applicator, order rolls and specify wind direction and core size up front — rewinding later costs more than getting it right.

4. What surface is it sticking to?

Smooth glass, PET and HDPE take standard permanent adhesive. Powder-coated, textured, or low-surface-energy plastics need a high-tack adhesive. Frozen or refrigerated application needs a freezer-grade adhesive applied before chilling, not after.

5. Does it need to come off cleanly?

Removable adhesive exists but trades away long-term hold. For seasonal promos and returnable containers it is right; for a product that ships and sits on a shelf for a year, permanent is safer.

6. Is it a regulated product?

Food, supplements, cosmetics, alcohol and cannabis all carry mandated content that frequently does not fit at legible size on a small label. Work out the required content first, then pick the label size. Doing it the other way round is why peel-back labels exist.

Artwork requirements

Six specs that cover almost every prepress problem we see.

Vector (AI, EPS, PDF) or 300 DPI raster at final print size. A 72 DPI web logo scaled up will print soft.
CMYK, not RGB. Bright RGB greens and blues shift noticeably when converted.
Bleed of 0.125in past the cut line, and keep critical text 0.125in inside it.
Convert type to outlines, or supply the fonts. Missing fonts are the most common prepress delay.
Flatten transparency effects, or expect them to be rasterised for you.
Solid black should be rich black (roughly C60 M40 Y40 K100) on large fills, plain K100 on small text.
